Last week my nephew at college sent my a picture of himself wearing a t-shirt that said, “I heart canned SPAM”. I instantly called him to find out what the deal was. I’ve never known the kid to eat canned food, much less canned meat products, so I was dying to know the story.
Turns out he burned through his money and was left with nothing to eat. One night he got hungry so he scavenged the cupboards looking for something. That’s when he said he found a can of SPAM. Yes an unclaimed can of that questionable meat product. Considering the gel stuff that’s in the can with the spam, I’m not really even sure it’s meat. But the kid was hungry so he opened the can and fried up the stuff.
I had to ask, why on Earth was there a can of canned SPAM in the first place. Interestingly enough, his roommate who uses lots of coupons printable got the can for free with one of his printable coupons. But like anyone else with taste buds, the roommate didn’t want to eat it.
A hungry college kid, one can of spam, free coupons printable…that all sounded interesting, but that didn’t explain the t-shirt. So the story behind that was that as it turns out, the kid actually loved the canned SPAM. He loved it so much he wrote a letter to the SPAM company. In the letter he told them how much he appreciated the product. He told them that even though his roommate obtained the their tasty product for free with a printable coupons, and even though he had to been extremely hungry when he tried the it—he actually loved fired SPAM.
In reply to the letter, the folks at SPAM sent my nephew a package full of SPAM spiffs, a recipe book, stickers, and a t-shirt. Well, the story and the picture cracked me up. And even though this kid has made fun of me for clipping coupons, I can now remind him, he and canned meats were brought together by a free coupons printable.
